Beeswax: Supporting artists the way bees know best...

It's a little known fact that we don't just supply honey to our list of wholesale clients. Beeswax may not be our best seller, but if you are a chef, then you'll be quite familiar with the ingenious ways that beeswax finds a role in the kitchen. That said, donating beeswax for a group of schoolchildren to reimagine the Roman Empire is a first for us. What would the bees say? They'd probably say there's no building material quite like beeswax…

Hackney-based Art Educationalists Art Hoppers used our beeswax as the primary material for a school project and exhibition at Gayhurst School. The pupils commented that the beeswax pellets looked like white chocolate, and when melted and poured, smelt and looked like honey.

Art Hoppers: Our local art educationalists

Art Hoppers is an inspirational art education project with its HQ in our local Hackney neighbourhood. Its founder, Claire, approached us a couple months back to help out with our all-natural beeswax for a project and exhibition which took place last week at Gayhurst school's gallery space, #TAG. Drawing inspiration from the 400 or so Roman wax tablets excavated from the City of London in 2010-2014, pupils made their own wax tablets, using our British beeswax as the writing surface.

We love being involved with projects like these as they not only teach the kind of craftsmanship that is at the heart of beekeeping, but also promote such an incredible natural material.

Amazing to think that, thanks to the extraordinary durability of the wax, the Roman tablets unearthed from the London Bloomberg site were still legible centuries after their bee craftsmen were turned to dust! Claire spoke to us about how the school pupils were able to explore its solid, molten, and re-solidified forms, and experience both its fragrance and its texture. We've never written in beeswax ourselves but we can imagine how perfectly tactile it is and, let's face it, surely the most sustainable writing support around? Beeswax can simply be wiped clean and re-used. What better way of slipping in a little bit of environmental awareness into a fun art activity? Hackney is bringing up its little citizens in the right direction...

Not all beeswax is the same and Claire chose ours for its particularly luminous, pale colour and its subtle perfume. You can experience it yourself in our range of all-natural beeswax candles – perfect for lighting late garden dinners – and and of course, in our honeycomb...

A spoonful of tea with your honey? Introducing Camellia's Teahouse

If the Romans wrote on beeswax, then perhaps they did so alongside a honey infused beverage. Drinking honey – in wine or in water – was supposed to have tonic and digestif effects, and we've kept that going at LHC by stirring a spoon of honey into our teas and tisanes. Whether peppermint, green or black, adding a spoon of honey – or drizzle with one of our handmade honey dippers – not only provides a daily dose of antimicrobials but points up the flavours inherent in the tea (and with none of the white sugar guilt…

As such, we're delighted to be working with specialist tea producers Camellia's on a couple of exciting collaborations, for which watch this space. We particularly love their emphasis on working small batch, their respect for the wild and the natural and attention to origin.

Tea specialists Camellia's have produced a rather special recipe that combines our Salisbury Honey and their Very Berry fruit tea in a baked cheesecake tart. Perfect for teatime...

Their thoughtful list offers a great place to start exploring how loose leaf tea, like honey, can capture a vast array of different floral, herbal, earthy and medicinal notes, depending on the plant and the place where it was grown. This week, Camellia's are matching our Salisbury Honey with their Very Berry Tea AND combining the two in a recipe that looks set to upgrade teatime…

Very Berry is a signature Camellia blend of dried berries and papaya with the kind of bright acidity which pairs beautifully with the viper's bugloss, sweet clove and sainfoin profile of our Salisbury harvest. Simply add a spoon of honey to your brew and experience the extra flavour dimension! Tastes even better with those Baked Berry & Honey Cheesecake tarts…
